Day 2 :: Counting Down To Christmas :: Journal Your Christmas
Advent calendars have always been a part of my Christmas experience - a direct result of the hand-made calendars that our preschool teachers gifted us with as children (one of mine is pictured below). And since there were three of us kids, all attending back to back for several years, we managed to get a full "set" of December months. Meaning that no matter what day the month started on, we had a calendar that fit. So, this became a cherished tradition that we followed throughout my childhood, well into my junior high years, and possibly into high school.
What made it special were the hand-cut and decorated paper markers that our teachers had, I'm sure, spent hours making. An angel, candle, gingerbread man, wreath, snowman, Rudolph, and Santa (complete with cotton beard) were just some of the pieces. The candy cane and the fireplace were two of my favoritees. It was kept on the fridge, low enough for us littles to reach, and the markers were taped around it, ready to be moved to the appropriate day.
This calendar was the highlight of my day as a kid, and I still get tickled thinking about it. The magic of memories!
